Guildwars 2 VS Diablo 3

Disclaimer : There is more info given for guildwars simply because this site is FOCUSED on guildwars 2, not diablo 3. But relevant links will be posted for more Diablo 3 information. Guild Wars 2 information will be directly posted here with links to sources.

Why do a Guild Wars 2 Vs Diablo 3 comparison when Diablo 3 isn't even an MMO, noob.
Simply because these are the top 2 games, in my opinion, that will be coming out in 2011-2012. Both have a huge following, (still currently playing Diablo 2 in fact), and are backed up by solid companies.

Blizzard, we all know them, we all know the quality of games that they release and the support they give their games. Diablo 2 which is almost half as old as your typical WoW player STILL receives regular updates and balancing AFTER TEN YEARS. That is amazing.

ArenaNet, created one of the top competitive PVP games currently available to us, Guild Wars 1, and listens to their community's needs. With the community in mind, they have created Guild Wars 2, every MMORPG Gamers dream. Will it be crowned WOW Killer? It sure as hell looks like it will.

So yeah, in a nutshell, this comparison was made because they are both epic games with a solid history and community backing them up. We'll probably end up with both games anyway. Also Guild Wars 1 was like Diablo 2, they didn't have any persistent worlds, so it's nice watching both games grow.

Based on what we currently know about Guild Wars 2 and Diablo 3 :

Will Diablo 3 have a persistent world where people can kill monsters, and pvp together?
-No. Diablo 3 will maintain the x players per game system. No one knows yet what the actual number of players that will be allowed in game are. But Blizzard did state that Diablo 3 will have some sort of Arena where players, even those who play single player, will be able to compete online with each other. Will they add a sort of free for all area that people can just go to, with no player limit? We don't know yet, but THEY SHOULD.

Will Guild Wars 2 have a persistent world where people can kill monsters, and pvp together?
-YES. Guild Wars 2 will still have it's instances, but it's their persistent world that attracted me back to the GuildWars franchise. Not only will they have a persistent world in Guild Wars 2, but I think Guild wars 2 will have THE BEST persistent world an MMORPG has ever had. Read the article for more information. No more KSing Dbags, or item thiefs.

Will there be PKing in Diablo 3? How is the PVP system?
-Since Diablo 3 is not an MMO, there isn't really much PKing. Sure you can join rooms and hostile everyone in Diablo 2, but we're not sure if that is possible in Diablo 3. And carebears usually just leave the game when you hostile them. And douchebags use hacks to TPPK (town portal PK) you.

It's been stated by Blizzard that Diablo 3 WILL have a competitive PVP ladder. Will we still be able to PVP like in Diablo 2, join a PVP game and hostile people? Blizzard hasn't said anything about that, but most probably yes.

Will there be PKing in Guild Wars 2? How is the PVP system?
-No, as far as we know. There has been no mention on PKing, only "world vs world" pvp. Some information on Guildwars 2 PVP :

"Jon Peters: We have two main types of competitive play in Guild Wars 2. First we have World vs World (WvW), which pits uneven numbers of players against each other across large maps and involves level progression. We also have Player vs Player, which pits smaller groups of evenly matched opponents against each other." - Inc gamer interview

When he says "involves level progression", I guess that means the opposing worlds can PK each other, but no same world PKing will happen in Guild Wars 2. I guess that would be alright, but it cuts down on the drama of same server PKings. That adds alot of fun for gamers, PKing rival guilds. They should consider adding PKing to the game. Without PKing, carebears would get bored and quit. Without Carebears, PKers would get bored and quit. Cycle of MMO life.

More on World PVP:

"World versus World (Also known as WvW, World PvP, and Casual PvP) is a mode of Player versus Player combat which takes place in the Mists. Worlds, or servers, are randomly matched up against two other worlds. Those match-ups will be rotated every week to match worlds against those of similar strength. The combat is open and features many objectives and roles which players can do; "players may decide to fight alone against a supply caravan, join a single group and capture a mine or create a large alliance to assault one of the numerous fortress that could give an advantage in the zone." The battle is on a large scale, where hundreds of people can fight on each side in week-long battles. (sweeeet)

Each opposing world starts out with castles, mercenary camps, mines, lumber mills and villages. Separating the starting zones are neutral zones controlled by no one, also containing fortresses, mines, and villages.
The resources gained from mines and lumber mills are used to rebuild walls, create siege engines, and generally defend the team's fortress.(sweeeeeet)

These territories and control points will confer benefits to the world that controls them; "maybe everyone gets increased energy regeneration or healing rate or enhanced loot drop rate." Players can gain experience and level their character in World PvP. Guilds will be able to take and hold keeps.[1]
Players are free to come and go from the battle as they please and there is no limit to the number of players entering (SWEEEEEEEET!). Players enter with a character of any level and use skills they have available to that character. Characters can enter as a sidekick which will allow them to play as a higher level character."

Structured PVP and World PVP :

"GW2Guru: Can you tell us about any of the ’structured PvP’ formats?

Ryan Scott – Game Designer: While we’re not ready to release all the details on structured PVP yet, there is some information we can share.

First of all, it’s important to clarify that Structured PvP and World versus World are very different beasts. WvW will take your current character – as is – and have them join an ongoing, large-scale battle (sweeeet) to win rewards for their world. Structured PvP will equalize everyone’s character level and unlock all options from the start to have two teams fight in a fair, instanced game.

We’ve mentioned before that we’re taking some cues from first-person shooters with how we’ll handle PvP in GW2. This, specifically, means a few things:

‣ GW2’s PvP will use the same formats for both pick-up/random and tournament play. Gone are the days of different game modes for differing skill levels, so players can learn skills that are relevant in all levels of competition.

‣ Pick-up play is 100% hot-joinable. You can leave or join a game already in progress, and the game modes and types will be built to support this. This removes the catch-22 of groups disallowing newer players to join, when those same players can’t get better because they can’t find a group. Tournaments will also be supported, so arranged teams will be able to face off in a competitive setting.

‣ Since games are hot-join, we want to add support for micro-communities to have some control over the type of play environment they want, while in turn letting all players seek out the experience they enjoy. We’ll be releasing more details on how we’re doing this later this year.

GW1 has a legacy of having strong PvP and competition, and we’re going to great lengths to make GW2 the best PvP MMO on the market by leaps and bounds."- GW2guru

What is the difference between PVP in the past Guild Wars 1 and Diablo 2?
-Guild Wars pvp, what made it famous, is that it was very tactical, and team based skill pvp. It's almost 100% skill based, there were also less cookie cutter builds. You didn't have to grind OR farm items. PVP was very competitive, making it a real e-sport. In guildwars 2 they're going to add World Vs World, to cater to the more casual people who just want to own other players, fair or not.

Diablo 2 was a more casual gamer type of PVP, where people just enter rooms and duel each other, or just hostile each other and be a total douchebag and kill (even naked kill) everyone. It also catered to the hardcore PVPer, but you had to join a dueling community in order to enjoy the non-pub free for all that usually make up Diablo 2 pvp. Item farming is required in order to be "1337". In Diablo 3 blizzard will actually be giving us ranked and unranked PVP.

Will Diablo 3 be P2P (pay to play) or F2P(free to play)?
-Yes, Diablo 3 will be P2P or B2P(Buy to Play). You will have to buy Diablo 3 before you can play it. But once you buy Diablo 3 , online gaming is COMPLETELY FREE to play. Diablo 3 also has a single player, offline mode. There will be no hidden charges or item malls. You buy it, you play it. Done deal.

Will Guild Wars 2 be P2P (pay to play) or F2P(free to play)?
-Yes, Guild Wars 2 will be P2P or B2P(Buy to Play). Same as Diablo 3, but without the offline, single player mode. And, this is a big and, there WILL be an item mall for guildwars 2. Will the item mall sell items that alter game balance in guild wars 2? ArenaNet says no, but we'll see. It could be no for now, but a few years later, we might see a "sword of imbaness" for $50. A lot of good games have been ruined by the stupid item mall business model (granado espada, and the bloodsuckers running that game (iahgames) for example).

As of now, 10/15/2010, ArenaNet has said it will only sell convenience/vanity items, but we will see. If it's anything like GW 1, then we have no problems.
